Black, White, and in Color: Essays on American Literature and Culture (University of Chicago Press, 2003). Spillers examines trends in the study of African-American literature and culture over the last 20 years. Spillers’s essays cover authors such as Ralph Ellison, Gwendolyn Brooks, Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston, and Margaret Walker. Other topics include the African-American sermon, William Faulkner, and the effect of migration on the black cultural experience. The volume is hailed as “astonishingly productive of new ideas.”
